I'll be honest, I had no idea how much the price of eggs had jumped in Texas. I went to the store yesterday to grab some items for dinner. Breakfast tacos were on the menu for the evening, and it's the first time I've needed eggs since the bird flu issues.

It's safe to say my eyes probably popped out of my head much like a cartoon when I saw the price of just 18 eggs, and not even the extra large ones that I normally get.

Nearly $9 for that pack of eggs. I remember being able to buy THREE of those 18 packs for that price. A gentleman standing next to me was holding an 18 pack of extra large eggs...then he saw the price.

He put them back and opted to get something else for dinner. I don't blame him, they were nearly $16 for an 18 pack of them.

So when I saw that there were egg smugglers that were stopped at the Texas border, I wasn't as surprised as I would've been. Normally it's drugs we hear about being smuggled into the country from Mexico...but eggs? Seriously?

It's illegal to bring fresh eggs, raw chicken, or any product that is unprocessed avian products into the country. Yes, that includes live chickens as well.

Since January, U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents have stopped 90+ people from trying to smuggle eggs into the United States. I can't say I blame them, I mean eggs are producing as much money as a dime bag these days.

In El Paso alone, agents have issued 16 different civil penalties that have totaled around $4,000, but it doesn't seem the penalties are stiff enough as they just continue to attempt to smuggle them into the U.S.
