However, one of the best things we can do as pet owners is to have our animals chipped.  That chip helps them find their way home when they get lost.

Why is it that important to have your pets micro-chipped?

A Baytown, Texas family is overjoyed because their dog was found.

According to the City of Borger:"Today, ACO (Animal Control Officer) Harper picked up a German shepherd. The dog was scanned for a microchip while on scene, where he confirmed that it did indeed have a chip. Once he got to the shelter, he looked up the owners information in the microchip database and contacted the owner. When he made contact with the owner she stated that the dog had been stolen 5 YEARS AGO from Baytown, TX."

According to a report in 2018 from ABC 13 Eye Witness News, the Malmstrom family were visiting their neighbors and when they returned home they couldn't find their German Shepherd Sheba.

Apparently, Sheba was stolen during a string of dog nappings in the Baytown area.

Sheba's family was overjoyed to hear the news, and according to a Facebook post by Sheba's mother Stephanie,

<div class="cxmmr5t8 oygrvhab hcukyx3x c1et5uql o9v6fnle ii04i59q"><div dir="auto">After speaking with animal control Officer Harper, he told me he seen her walking in a neighborhood, she was extremely friendly and jumped right in his truck! He brought her back to their facility, scanned her, and found my info that was linked to her chip and began the process of reaching out to me!</div></div><div class="cxmmr5t8 oygrvhab hcukyx3x c1et5uql o9v6fnle ii04i59q"><div dir="auto">We had flagged her chip as “stolen” immediately after she was taken and he assured me the dog would not be released to anyone other than our family or organizations working towards getting her home!</div></div>

No one will ever know how Sheba ended up all the way in the Texas Panhandle, but the Malstrom family is going to be reunited with their baby all because they took the time and had Sheba microchipped.

Other organizations are working to get Sheba home, it looks like she will be getting her own private flight home thanks to Pilot N Paws, an organization that helps with animal transportation.

If you are in Borger and your pet isn't chipped, then you definitely want to attend the Micro-chip & Kidprint kit event on August 14th.  The cost for the microchip is $20.

If you are in the Amarillo area most area vets offer microchips.  You can also take your pet to the Amarillo Animal Welfare and Management and they microchip pets for $10.
