Over the past few weeks there has been much attention on the term "Catfished."  I've seen it on Dr. Phil, Inside Edition and MTV has an entire show dedicated to it.  So here's my question, how common is it?

For those of you who aren't familiar with the word "Catfished," it is when someone deceives you online.  They create this persona through profiles and gets others to fall in love with them.  They usually string them along, but never meet them face to face.  Basically, when you are catfished, you are lied to by a person who gets a kick out of this.

A lot of the stories that I've heard are women getting catfished by other women pretending to be a man.  There are always excuses to why they can't meet.  The result is usually devastation.

What makes people do this?  To create this fake person and get different people to fall in love with you is just sick.  When you Catfish people you are ruining their lives!  And secondly, aren't there a few signs that tell you this person isn't real?

I have never heard of anyone being duped like this, but apparently it is very common.  But just how common?  Have you ever been catfished?
