I will be the first to say that I have never seen a Bald Eagle here in Amarillo. I never would have thought that I would be able to. I asked Charlie if he has. He said that he has just once.

So when I found that you can, you just need to know where to look, I was excited. This is now going to be a mission of mine. I had no idea that every winter there are Bald Eagles that make Amarillo their home. I mean this is really pretty cool.

What Do Bald Eagles Eat?

So I started reading up about this. I learned by reading THIS blog that Bald Eagles actually like to eat prairie dogs. They think they taste like chicken. Ok, well all you have to do is find a prairie dog town for your best bet.

Vicki Wilmarth, who lives here in Amarillo, seems to be one of the area experts on finding these Bald Eagles. She is definitely one to listen too. I mean she wrote the blog and she has the photos to back up her find.

Here are some great places to go out and look for Bald Eagles if you want your own experience:

  • NE 24th and Loop 335
  • Lake Tanglewood
  • McGee Lake

According to Wilmarth:

Bald Eagles also have been spotted and reported to eBird by birders at Buffalo Lake National Wildlife Refuge, the prairie dog town just west of Randall High School (Sundown Lane and Bell), Whitaker Road near the Fritch Highway and in the prairie dog town east of Airport Boulevard (NE 3rd and Pullman Road), where you can often see eagles as you drive to the airport. I've also seen them fly through Thompson Park, John Stiff Park and Greenways Park, but they don't tend to stay in those more populated, busy areas.

So if one of your goals is to find and take your own photos of Bald Eagles, you can do just that here in Amarillo.
