High School prom is a night full of memories for both students and parents.  Students will remember this night as one last go round, parents will remember the dent in the bank account.

Over the weekend I was talking to a friend who had a daughter going to Caprock's prom.  She was telling me that they spend a lot of money getting her ready.  So I asked what a couple hundred dollars and her response blew me away.  About $1400!

I don't know if I am just crazy, but this is an insane amount.  She pulled out a budget book and showed me.  It wasn't one big thing, but a lot of smaller items that added up.  So here is the run down on what she spend:

Planet Fitness Membership: $70 (her daughter wanted to look fit)

Dress from DNK Formals: $498

Shoes from Zappos: $112

Clutch Purse: $78

Jewelry: $150

Hair: $120

Nails: $30

Make-up: $50

Boutonniere: $12

Limo: $150 (split 6 ways)

And then my friend wanted to make sure she had money for dinner and other prom activities so she gave her an extra $150.

All these items added together equals $1415.00!  I still can't believe it.  And as if defending the amount, my friend says "well it could've been more but her date bought her prom ticket."

Really?  How much is a prom ticket, $10?  That doesn't really make a difference with $1400.

Now maybe it's because I do not have a teenager, but that seems a little extreme for a prom.  I get that it is a once in a lifetime event and that this will be one of the last memories with all of your high school friends, but it seems a bit much.

Maybe I am just out of touch with expenses.  Would you spend that much on your son or daughter's prom?
