I'd rate this about an 8 on the WTF-o-meter.  A 13 year old 8th grader out of Garnett, KS was suspended from school for carrying a purse.  Did I mention it was a boy?  Does that make any difference?  Anderson County Junior/Senior High School student, Skylar Davis, has been suspended for refusing to put down his murse (man-purse).

"At issue is the colorful Vera Bradley purse which Skylar Davis, an 8th grader at Anderson County Junior/Senior High School, insists on wearing.

"It expresses myself, and I think everyone else can wear it, so I can wear it as well."

But a member of the faculty felt differently.

Skylar found that out after he say he was summoned to assistant Principal Don Hillard's office.

"I was told to go put it up, and I went to the office, and they told me that I had to. I refused to take it off and they suspended me."

The school then called Skylar's mom.

"I was a little furious so I called the school just to reverify the story, and it was that he refused to take off his Vera Bradley bag and nothing more to it," said Leslie Willis, Skylar's mother.

Willis scanned the student handbook which she says makes no mention of bags and purses. She questions the decision to suspend her son and also the timing.

"Skylar has been going to school since August every morning with that same Vera Bradley bag on, has not taken it off. What is the problem today?"

How messed up is that?!  Is it any different than carrying a book bag instead of a backpack?  What, is it a "distraction to other students"?  This is the year 2013!  Get out of the stone-age Garnett, Kansas!  And people think Texas is behind in the times, pshht!

Here's what I love the most!  This is the "mission statement" on the school's website:

Our Mission

With the fundamental belief that every student can learn, the primary purpose of Garnett Unified School District No. 365 is to provide each student the learning opportunity for him/her to establish a foundation for success, both now and in the future.

Yeah, the phrase "each student" needs to be taken out of there and replaced with " each students, as long as the student isn't a boy carrying a purse"...
