People in Amarillo and beyond are being scammed by crooks preying on those who had an extension to pay their taxes, basically saying pay up or go to jail.  As October 15th is the last day to pay taxes, and people that still owe begin to worry, they're an easy target to these scammers.  They pose as the IRS, and out the fear into those on the receiving end of the call.

"Sherrie Slayton, a tax consultant at TAXequences, said the fear of owing taxes is highest during this time of year, which makes it easier to fall victim to a scam claiming they are from the IRS.

Slayton said the IRS does not do prerecorded messages, nor do they call anyone personally on the phone. If you feel you are a victim of this scam or are uncertain if you owe taxes to the IRS, call them directly at 1-800-829-1040."
