When it comes to plants, you don't expect them to eat you.  I mean Amarillo isn't Little Shop of Horrors, however, there are plants that are carnivorous and can grown in this area.

In fact, Amarillo is a great place to grow certain carnivorous plants.

They are one of the plants that could grow and thrive in our city.  They require lots of sun and water to survive.  We do have a lot of sunshine.  However the water may be an issue, so you'll probably have to water them a lot.   They benefit from high exposure to humidity although Amarillo doesn't have high humidity, it's still a good place to grow your Venus Fly Trap. When they are in their growing season, you need to make sure they receive at least 6 hours of sunlight.  The perfect temperature that your Venus Fly Trap can live is 32 F and 95 F and most of the time we are in those temperatures.  We do have a few freezing days in the winter, but you'll just have to winterize your plant.

These are other carnivorous plants and are native to Texas.  They will survive and grow here in Amarillo.  These plants grow in soggy, nutrient-poor soil or waters, they have developed methods to trap and digest insects.

Sundews will survive in Zone 6b which is where we are at in Amarillo.   However, they grow in bogs or wet areas.  Their leaves are covered in these hairy tentacles, and they release a sticky substance that is used to catch their prey. They thrive in acidic soil with low nutrients.  They also need indirect sunlight and at least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day.  They need moist soil.  It is preferred to water them with filtered water.  Their thriving temperature is 61-75 F.  They would definitely need to be brought in or winterized for the winter season.

These are a few carnivorous plants that will grow in our area.  However, you can grow most types of carnivorous plants in a terrarium inside your home or greenhouse.  This way you can control the elements, like sun, heat, and humidity.
