Scary times yesterday in Amarillo after school had released. It's one of our biggest fears as a parent. When we leave our kids in the care of someone else or have them ride the bus to and from school, we trust that they're going to be safe.

Now when I tell you about this, I want to preface that no one involved with the care of the kids is at fault for this at all. It's something that could've happened to anyone at any time, especially with how some drivers are.

Yesterday, February 4th, a notification went out via ParentSquare to all Canyon ISD parents, and if your kiddos ride the bus home, you immediately had a bit of a panic moment.

Right away if your kids were on a route that involved Highway 60, your heart sunk and you went into immediate panic. Any time you see an accident with a semi-truck, you immediately fear for the worst. We've seen pictures and videos of those accidents and they never seem to end well.

Outside of knowing the accident occurred on Highway 60, there was no other info. That all changed about 15 minutes or so after the first message came through when we were provided with an update.

Spring Canyon Elementary and Canyon Intermediate School students on the bus were hit by a semi-truck that ran a red light. It ended up colliding with the bus as it was making a turn on a green light.

One student was transported to a local hospital as a precautionary measure and no one suffered any life-threatening injuries thankfully. However, it's incidents like this that re-open the case for seatbelts on all busses.
