The first couple of weeks of school always bring challenges. You're pushing through new processes, new students, etc. However, Canyon ISD is now dealing with something they don't ever want to deal with, let alone the beginning of the school year.

One of the biggest concerns of any school is allergies. It seems that every form you sign asks about whether your student has allergies, but with good reason.

The most common allergy is related to peanuts, or just nuts in general. For some its a light allergy, but for many with this allergy, it can be life-threatening.

Many people that are allergic to it can't have ANYTHING to do with nuts near their food, and something as simple as it touching something else could cause the reaction. Canyon ISD has found themselves in a scary spot because of this.

In an email sent out to parents of students in Canyon ISD, Christian Nicholson stated that it was brought to their attention that certain bread products they use for lunches were processed in a facility that also produces pine nuts.

Now, to clarify, it doesn't say that any of the products were made USING pine nuts, or any derivative of them, but it is possible that the bread products could've come in contact with machinery or something else that did touch the pine nuts.

This would obviously create a huge issue as there would be traces of it in there. Depending on how severe the allergy to nuts is, this could ultimately become a life-threatening deal for someone who ate the bread products.

In the email, Canyon ISD stated they immediately removed all bread products from their previous provider and moved to a vendor that doesn't produce their product in a facility containing nuts. They have also thoroughly cleaned all cafeterias and food storage areas in the entire district.

As of this writing, there have been no reports of any allergic reactions on campus.
